The VI Flahertiana International Documentary Film Festival Festival Regulations

The VI Flaheriana International Documentary Film Festival will take place in Perm, Russia from May 3rd to 10th, 2006. The Festival will screen about 150 documentary pictures selected to compete in the main programme or as part of various hors concours programme sections. Main Festival Programme will include not more than 30 films. Illegible for the main programme are documentaries that develop the cinematography aesthetics first introduced by Robert Flaherty in his masterpiece Nanook of the North. Apart from the main program, Flahertaina-2006 will feature a number of hors concours programme sections focusing on specific countries, film festivals, directors, and social problems. Festival's Annual Conference dedicated to principal trends of documentary film development will be held as usual.

How to enter your film

The Festival Selection Commission must receive your application package, including the following:

  • completed Entry Form;
  • one VHS cassette (PAL) or DVD (PAL).

Film copies should have the English or Russian subtitles or voice-over. All postal/shipping expenses to the Festival are to be paid by the entrants, as well as all other expenses incurred, such as insurance, etc.

Deadlines

Your application package must be received by February 15, 2006.

General Festival Screening Requirements

  • Films should be released after January 1, 2005.
  • Film copy should be provided with English subtitles or voice-over.
  • The Festival accepts the following screening formats: 35mm, Beta SP (PAL), Digital Beta PAL, DVCam PAL.
  • Films to be selected to compete in Festival programme may be of any length except super-short (less than 7 minutes).

Film copies submitted to the Selection Commission are not returned to the entrants.

Selection Procedures

Selection Commission led by the Chairman selects the documentaries that will participate in all programme sections. In case that the film has been selected, the Chairman will notify the applicant, director, producer and distributor of the film by March 1, 2006 at the latest. Once the film has been selected to compete in the Festival, the following materials must be received by IDFF before March 15, 2006:

  • three printed stills (full-colour);
  • a photo of director (full-colour);
  • film publicity material;
  • a 3-minute clip from the documentary for publicity in Beta SP PAL or DVCam PAL.
  • Editorial script in Russian or English

After selection of a documentary, the Festival has the right to:

  • use three minutes from the documentary for broadcasting or other purposes associated with the film and Festival promotion;
  • use the publicity material to promote the film and the Festival;
  • keep VHS cassette or DVD of selected documentaries in its archive for non-profit shows or educational purposes.

Transportation of films and videos

The Festival must receive film copies for preview by April 15, 2006. In the event that the Festival organisers wish to use any film for press-preview, the IDFF managers will contact the right owners on a separate basis. Film copies will be returned to filmmakers within four weeks after completion of the Festival.

Transport Costs

For 35mm films, transport costs must be prepaid up to arrival at the Perm Airport. The Festival will take care of the costs of customs clearance of films at the Perm Airport both on arrival and re-importation to the right owner. The cost of transport of videos to the Festival office is the responsibility of the applicant, but IDFF will take care of all charges associated with the copy return to participant.

Insurance

Insurance for shipping of films and videos to and from the Perm Airport is the entire responsibility of the participants.

Invitations

The Festival will cover the costs of five-day's stay in Perm of directors whose documentaries The have been selected for the main Festival programme or hors concours programme sections. The above will include hotel accommodation and two meals/day. Anyone who wants to attend the Festival must fill out and return an accreditation form. IDFF will contact you to co-ordinate on accommodation conditions, hotel charges, dates of stay and Festival schedule.

The Jury will award:

  • Main Jury prize and US$ 10,000 (to film director)
  • Prize for the best long documentary and US$ 3,000 (to film director)
  • Prize for the best short documentary and US$ 3,000 (to film director)
  • Prize of film critics and US$ 3,000 (to film director)
  • Prize of the Organising Committee "For outstanding achievements in documentary film art" and US$ 5,000

Participation in the Festival envisages that all clauses of the above Regulations should be fully met. In case of disputes, Russian version of the Regulations will prevail.
