The IX Flahertiana International Documentary Film Festival
The VIII Flaheriana International Documentary Film Festival will take place in Perm, Russia from 16th to 22nd September, 2009.
International Competition is a basic part of the festival film program.
Documentaries that develop the cinematography aesthetics first introduced by Robert Flaherty in his masterpiece Nanook of the North enter the competition.
Within “Flahertiana-2009” along with the main program the following events are held:
• "Russian Flahertiana" program, the winner of which will be determined based on audience voting.
• special thematic programs devoted to cinematography of different countries, to film festivals, directors and social problems,
• theoretic discussions, seminars, discussion panels.
How to enter your film
The Festival Selection Commission must receive your application package, including the following:
• filled-in entry form (mailed to flahertiana@perm.ru and sent with a copy of the film);
• 1 DVD copy of the film;
Film copies should have English subtitles or voice-over.
All postal/shipping expenses are to be paid by the entrants, as well as all other expenses incurred, such as insurance, etc.
Deadlines
Your application package must be received by 1 June, 2009.
General Festival Screening Requirements
• Films should be released after January 1, 2008
• Film copy provided should be with English subtitles;
• The Festival accepts the following screening formats: 35mm, Beta SP (PAL), Digital Beta PAL, DVCam PAL;
• Films to be selected for competition may be of any length except super-short (less than 7 minutes);
• If a film does not meet all listed requirements, it may not be included into competition program.
Film copies submitted to the Selection Commission are not returned to the entrants.
Selection Procedures
Selection Commission led by the Chairman selects the documentaries that will participate in all program sections. In case the film has been selected, the Chairman will notify the applicant, director, producer and distributor of the film by 1 July, 2009.
Once the film has been selected to compete in the Festival, the following materials should be received by IDFF before 15 July, 2009:
• three printed stills (full-colour);
• a photo of director (full-colour);
• film publicity material;
• a 3-minute clip from the documentary for publicity in Beta SP PAL or DVCam PAL;
• Editorial script in Russian or English.
If a documentary has been selected the Festival has the right to:
• use three minutes from the documentary for broadcasting or other purposes associated with the film and Festival promotion;
• use the publicity material to promote the film and the Festival;
• keep DVD copies of selected documentaries in its archive for non-profit shows or educational purposes.
Transportation of films and videos
The Festival should receive festival copies by 15 September, 2009. In case the Festival committee wants to use any film for press-preview the IDFF managers will get in touch with the right owners.
Film copies will be returned to filmmakers within four weeks after completion of the Festival.
Transport Costs
For 35mm and 16 mm films, transport costs must be prepaid up to arrival at the Perm Airport by the sender. The Festival undertakes customs clearance costs of films at the Perm Airport both on arrival and re-importation to the right owner as well as costs for transporting film copy to the Festival office from the airport of Perm.
The cost of transport of video tapes to the Festival office is the responsibility of the applicant, but IDFF will take care of all charges associated with the copy return.
Insurance
Insurance for shipping of films and videos to and from the Perm Airport is the entire responsibility of the participants.
Invitations
The Festival will cover transport costs and costs of three-day’s stay in Perm of directors whose documentaries have been selected for the international competition. The above will include hotel accommodation and two meals/day.
Directors of films included into competition should inform the Festival direction on dates of his/her arrival by 1 September 2009.
Anyone who wants to attend the Festival must fill out and return an accreditation form
Festival Awards
International Jury awards:
• Grand Prix for “The Best Documentary” – “Big Golden Nanook” and 250,000 rub.* (to film director)
• Award for “The Best Long Documentary” – “Silver Nanook” and 75,000 rub.* (to film director)
• Award for “The Best Short Documentary” – “Silver Nanook” and 75,000 rub.* (to film director)
FIPRESSI jurty awards:
• FIPRESCI Award – “Silver Nanook” and 75,000 rub.* (to film director)
Audience Award - "Small Silver Nanook" and 25000 rub. - is awarded to a winner of the "Russian Flahertiana" program.
Participation in the Festival envisages that all clauses of the above Regulations should be fully met. In case of disputes, Russian version of the Regulations will prevail.
*- Prize money are paid out in rubles, dollars or euros (as winners decide).
